“You Can’t Cook When You’re Living in Your Car!”

One meal changes everything. Just ask Steve.

Years before, he had watched helplessly as his parents’ relationship crumbled. Then a so-called caregiver led him into reckless behavior that nosedived his life to the pit of destruction for years.

And all that, magnified by a learning disorder and a relentless addiction that was no match for the treatment centers he entered time and again.  “I heard good stuff in those places, but I wasn’t ready to hear it,” he remembers.

“My life was a mess!”

— Steve

Most of his life consisted of odd jobs, recovery centers, and homelessness. “I was a mess,” Steve says. “I even lived in my car for awhile. That was no fun; it was cold and uncomfortable. I had to do things I’m not proud of just to get meals and survive. You can’t cook when you’re living in your car!”

Finally exhausted, he cried out to God, “Get me out of the mess I’m in!”

That’s when YOU gave him a second chance.

Since being at the Mission, “My whole life is changing so fast,” Steve says. “It feels so good. My family is encouraged.”

Here, Steve spends his days “creating a better version of myself,” he says. He is slowly forgetting about the violence he experienced. And the painful relationships. And the people who took advantage of his kindness time and again.

And it all started with a meal.

Steve says he’s growing spiritually by reading the Bible every night for hours, along with other books that are enriching his heart and mind. “I just thank God for changing my life,” he says. “It was scary back then. Now I’m blessed.”

Encouraged and excited about the future, Steve says, “A setback is a setup for a comeback.  Being here has been just amazing.”
