Mission Update: COVID-19 Response

UPDATE FORTHCOMING AFTER PRESS CONFERENCE WITH GOV. WALZ ON MONDAY MARCH 23

Union Gospel Mission Twin Cities Taking Every Precaution to Cope with Crisis.

GIVE NOW

These are desperate times.

The COVID-19 outbreak our world faces right now especially threatens people experiencing homelessness who turn to us for help at Union Gospel Mission Twin Cities. Many of our guests do not have the resources to get the assistance they need should they become ill.

Homelessness does not take a sick day. We care deeply about the health and well-being of everyone who comes through our doors; that’s why we are taking every precaution.

Like other organizations, we’re following the guidance recommended by the CDC, the Minnesota Department of Health, and other authorities, that will safeguard our employees, students, and guests. These extra steps include:

   · Health screenings at both our men’s and women’s facilities
   · Isolation and quarantine plans for those who test positive for COVID-19
   · Teletherapy instead of face-to-face sessions to ensure students’ mental health care is not disrupted
   · Increased cleaning and disinfecting across our facilities
   · Expanded meal times to promote social distancing

Many of these steps come at a cost; for example, we are erecting tents for screening all male visitors outside the Bethel Hotel. We also need to hire additional staff, particularly for the overnight hours. We have also suspended volunteers in our education program for the time being.

While necessary during this crisis, there are no extra funds to meet these unexpected needs. These additional expenses are not in our budget.

Your emergency gift today will provide the resources to keep our population safe, while also continuing the high-quality services our students and visitors need and have come to expect.

Of course, the extra measures we need to take now are not our only needs. Your support will ensure wraparound care continues for people facing homelessness, poverty, and addiction every day of the year, from childcare and meals to education and addiction recovery.

If you feel it in your heart to give, please be as generous as you can on behalf of our homeless neighbors during this global health emergency. Every dollar helps. Thank you!
