David has been at the Christ Recovery Center at Union Gospel Mission Twin Cities since June. After years of struggling with alcohol addiction and trying other treatments without success, David knew he needed a change. “I just got to the point where I needed to do something different,” he recalls. His brother, an alumnus of the program, not only recommended the Mission but personally brought him there.
From the moment he walked through the doors, David felt a sense of hope and belonging, finding shelter, support and a community ready to walk alongside him in his journey. The holistic approach of the program provided counseling, mental health support, and practical skills to rebuild his life. “They don’t just help us become sober, they provide so much more,” he says.

David’s story is marked by loss and resilience. Five years ago, he lost his wife of 19 years, whom he deeply loved. That loss, coupled with his addiction, brought significant challenges. However, through the Christ Recovery Center’s onsite mental health clinic and one-on-one therapy, David has found healing and a way to process his grief. “Therapy here works for me because it’s personal and focused on what I need,” he shares.
Family is David’s greatest motivation. He is the father of three and grandfather to five, and their close relationships fuel his determination. “My kids and grandkids are my motivation,” he says. He dreams of getting his own place, with enough room for his grandkids to visit and make memories together. With the program’s holistic support—including spiritual guidance, mental health resources and practical life skills—David is confident in his future. “I know I’m gonna make it in this program because of the support I have here… staff and alumni… and the motivation I’ve found here.”
“If I don’t get it right here, there’s no better place out there,” he says.
David’s gratitude for the Mission and all who have gotten him to this point is immeasurable. “If I don’t get it right here, there’s no better place out there,” he says. His journey of recovery is one of transformation, hope and a steadfast commitment to becoming the person his family and faith inspire him to be. “If you’re willing to do the work, you will see the outcomes of it,” he encourages. With the support of Union Gospel Mission, David now cherishes his ability to be present for his family with a clear mind and heart. And he is well on his way in his recovery journey.
