For this reason, the Mission focuses on discipleship of its students so that they might become devoted followers of Jesus Christ.
Union Gospel Mission Twin Cities has embedded chaplains in every program, including children and our emergency shelter and transitional housing facilities. According to the Chaplains Department, their goal is to “invite people to the love of Jesus by being conduits of hope through humility.”
Providing spiritual support
On a practical level, chaplains provide spiritual support and encouragement through personal relationships. On any given day, chaplains will:
- Help organize daily Chapel services or lead Bible studies
- Offer spiritual support to individuals
- Provide spiritual and pastoral care to residents and their families during crisis
This support adds to the case management, clinical support, education and career development, addiction recovery, and other services that the Mission offers to help people gain a stronger foothold in life. The Chaplain’s Department works closely with these other areas to provide the most comprehensive wraparound services available to people who are homeless in our community.
Taken together, all the services at the Mission, including spiritual care, help each person navigate the complexities of the human experience.
Pastoral care for students and guests
Students and residents are discipled as they grow in their understanding of the person of Jesus and learn about God’s Word. Chaplains lead students and guests into a relationship with God and help them understand the implications of their faith to everyday life in such areas as relationships, finances, and emotional health.
Through relational connections, students grow in becoming apprentices of Jesus.
Staff spiritual health
Staff members at the Mission also have opportunities for spiritual growth through the ministry of the Chaplains Department. Chaplains encourage the spiritual growth of staff at the Mission through:
- Classes
- Prayer walks
- Personal meetings
- Educational opportunities
