Graduates of our residential programs may get out of homelessness and poverty more quickly and permanently when they enroll at 2- or 4-year colleges or trade schools upon completion. Higher education helps to remove the burden of generational poverty, benefiting families for years to come.

For this reason, Ron and Michele Sznaider have created the Joshua Sznaider Scholarship fund. This fund will help provide scholarships to Mission graduates with financial need who have overcome addiction or mental health challenges.

About Joshua

The parents of Joshua Sznaider established this endowed scholarship in honor of their son so that his legacy could live on by helping others to gain economic self-sufficiency through higher education, something that Josh felt strongly about.

Josh was an avid reader, a student of history and cartography, and someone who loved to travel and meet new people.  Josh believed in racial and economic equality.  He also believed that education could create new opportunities.  Josh graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and then a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree.  He had a dream to start businesses in Africa to help people in need so they could develop economic self-reliance.

Over the years, Joshua had been prescribed numerous medications and eventually began to struggle with addictions.  Shortly after voluntarily attending a treatment center, he experienced a first-ever mental health incident whereby he became unaware of his surroundings.  This situation unfortunately led to an ill-fated encounter with police who over-reacted and restrained him in a choke hold from which he later died.  He was unarmed.

Although Joshua could not continue with his life dreams, this scholarship provides targeted resources to individuals who have overcome addictions and strive for higher education opportunities so they can live a better life.
