The goal of the Discipleship Program is to encourage the spiritual, educational, and career growth of participants. It does this through spiritual guidance and education, work therapy, life and basic education training, and mentoring.
Position Summary
The Discipleship Supervisor runs the daily work component of the Discipleship Program. This position supervises the disciples work and trains them for various positions, assigns duties, creates schedules, tracks hours worked, leads morning devotions, teaches one afternoon class, transports clients to offsite work duties, leads the Discipleship worship choir, and performs miscellaneous janitorial duties.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Responsible for the day to day operations and requirements of the work component of the Discipleship Program. This includes, but is not limited to, work assignments, scheduling, supervision, discipline, supply stocking, cleaning at the men’s shelter, recycling runs, transporting crews to the various sites around the Union Gospel Mission and supervising work done at those locations.
- Provides spiritual care to the men in the Discipleship Program, including devotionals, choir, spiritual direction, and various small-group teaching duties.
- Teaches one Bible class a week.
- Facilitates Geneses classes, as needed.
- Attends the Supervisor’s meeting, Laundry meeting, House meeting, and Disciplinary action meetings, as needed.
- Responsible for maintaining client confidentiality in accordance with HIPPA Privacy Regulations.
- Supports a co-operative work environment with other Union Gospel Mission programs to ensure that program goals and objectives are achieved.
- Provides direct administrative support and monthly reporting assistance to the Director regarding the routine operation of the Discipleship Work Program.
- Responsible for effectively managing, reducing, and diffusing verbal and physical conflicts.
- Performs miscellaneous job duties, as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements
- High School diploma, GED or equivalent.
- Completion of the Discipleship Program, or equivalent program.
- Two year’s ministry experience or experience in a related field.
- Participation in on-going educational opportunities and certifications.
- Required experience working with ex-offender population or in a prison environment.

- Strong understanding of Biblical principles and teachings.
- Demonstrates exceptional judgment and professional boundaries.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
- Demonstrates a strong team orientation; able to work effectively with staff in the coordination of support activities.
- Knowledge of principles and practices of training, evaluating and providing work direction to others.
- Able to analyze information and to define and solve problems.
- Able to make administrative, procedural, business and process decisions and judgments.
- Able to implement program guidelines and offer suggestions for improvement.
- Able to effectively utilize computers and Microsoft Office software applications.
- Self motivated and demonstrates initiative.
- Able to support UGM’s statement of Christian faith and share that faith and knowledge with staff and clients.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
- Work is performed in an emergency shelter / transitional housing environment with no unusual physical demands other than light lifting.
- Work involves physical effort encountered in normal Janitorial duties.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee may, on occasion, be exposed to angry or violent clients or community members.
