The Union Gospel Missions Chaplain Department is dedicated to providing exceptional spiritual care, non-therapeutic counseling, case management support, and general services to our clients. Our goal is to invite people to the love of Jesus by being conduits of hope through humility.

Position Summary

The Program Chaplain will act as the shepherd/pastor/case manager for program participants in full-time programming. The Program Chaplain will be responsible for guiding a group of 10-15 program participants (Family groups) through programming with one-on-one pastoral care and case management. This will include facilitating groups, designing spiritual development curriculum to meet UGM and program objectives and a strong ability to document program progress for individuals and provide program recommendations in conjunction with individual Program Directors.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide pastoral care to individuals and groups, including periodic follow up via visitation, prayer, non-therapeutic counsel, and spiritual direction.
  • Evaluate group member progress and provide case management through weekly one-on-one meetings; ensure participant confidentiality in accordance with HIPPA Privacy Regulations.
  • Track participant progress on a weekly basis through recording accurate and timely case notes.
  • Work in conjunction with Program Directors to coordinate care for family group members; act as a liaison connecting assigned group members to UGM services and resources (adult education, counseling, programs, etc.
  • Plan and lead retreats, in coordination with program directors.
  • Plan, prepare, and teach weekly Discipleship and Bible classes for program participants and UGM program staff, as assigned; design curriculum as needed.
  • Foster a collaborative environment focused on achieving organizational goals across all programs; identify opportunities for partnership across programs and functions.
  • Attend quarterly internal and external professional development seminars and training.
  • Confer with the Director of Chaplains and other leaders to review and evaluate the departmental goals and priorities; compile records and prepare monthly program reports.
  • Effectively manage, reduce, and diffuse conflicts ranging from the expression of verbal anger up to and including violence.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree with a concentration in theology, counseling, psychology, social work or related field and 2+ years of ministry experience required.
  • Case management experience required; experience as a drug and alcohol counselor is valued.
  • Must be a Licensed/Ordained minister including ecclesiastical endorsement where required.
  • Must be committed to further training and development in counseling and therapeutic techniques.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable by UGM’s insurance carrier.
  • Current UGM participants and UGMTC participants with less than two years since program graduation are ineligible.

  • Strong understanding of biblical principles and teachings.

  • Ability to perform sacerdotal functions, baptism, and conduct worship services
  • Effective leadership and management abilities.
  • Demonstrates exceptional judgment and professional boundaries.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of training, evaluating and providing work direction to others.
  • Able to analyze information and to define and solve problems. Ability to read and interpret general business periodicals and theological books.
  • Able to make administrative and procedural decisions and judgments on business and process issues.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Able to implement program guidelines and offer suggestions for improvement.
  • Computer literacy is required. Must be able to operate Microsoft suites; ClientTrack and other business related software.
  • Able to be self-motivated and demonstrate initiative.
  • Able to support UGM’s statement of Christian faith and share that faith and knowledge with staff and clients.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Work is performed in an emergency shelter / transitional housing environment with no unusual physical demands.
  • Work involves physical effort encountered in normal, everyday office activities.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may, on occasion, be exposed to angry or violent clients or community members.
